Winter Posture/Asana Workshop Series

These mixed-level workshops are intended to provide yoga practitioners with the knowledge and techniques that will help them make progress with their postures. Small groups and two instructors allow for individualized attention. The material presented to each practitioner will be adjusted to match their ability, and students can expect to leave each workshop with a practice plan that will help them advance their postures to the next level.

Each of the 4.5-hour workshops includes:

-A well-rounded asana practice

-An hour of focused work on the workshop's specific topic

-One segment of a four-part talk on asana practice for stress relief

-A plant-based lunch featuring homegrown organic produce

Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga

This 30-hour course provides students with an introduction to Ashtanga Yoga, based on the tradition of K. Pattabhi Jois and the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute of Mysore, India. Students who participate in this course will establish the foundation of a home yoga practice. They will learn to correctly execute a 45-minute self-led posture practice that has been adapted to suit their ability level. 

This course is offered at University of Nevada Las Vegas as PEX 169 with Marissa.

Deepening Your Practice

This is a 100-hour course in yoga theory and practice. It includes:

-8 Mysore-style asana practices

-In-depth study of sun salutations, standing postures, the ashtanga primary series and the closing postures

-Instruction and practice of Sanskrit mantras

-Pranayama instruction and practice

-Philosophy from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and Valmiki’s Ramayana

-Optional participation in Vedic fire ceremonies

Yoga students who participate in this intensive course will have the opportunity to delve more deeply in to the practices that they have already established and to receive guidance and instruction in other yoga techniques.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga 30-hour course, or equivalent.

The Glorious Exploits of Hanuman

This is a 18-hour course in chanting and the study of sacred texts.

It includes:

-6 hours chanting instruction and practice of the Hanumana Chalisa 

-4 hours reading and discussion of excerpts from unabridged translations of Valmiki’s Ramayana and Tulasidasa’s Ramacharitamanasa

-4 plant-based lunches and 2 dinners featuring homegrown organic produce

-Discussion and camaraderie

-Course Materials

Course Fee: $180

Prerequisite: Familiarity with Rama’s story. All participants will be asked to spend at least ten hours reading a translation of the story before attending the class sessions. We’ll help you choose an appropriate version when you register.

One-on-one yoga lessons with Jeremy or Marissa in our pleasant yoga room are available at the rate of $50/hour. 

Individual instruction can be of benefit to sincere yoga students of all levels of experience. 

We recommend that you schedule several 1-2 hour sessions over the course of a month, and then take 2-3 months to engage in practice and self-study.

Ongoing mentoring helps yoga teachers expand their knowledge base, improve their skills and become more effective educators. Contact us and we’ll develop a personalized course of study for you that will also fulfill Yoga Alliance’s CEC requirements. 

Desert Yoga School is registered with Yoga Alliance as a provider of 300-hour (Advanced) yoga teacher trainings. Dedicated, long-term Desert Yoga School students who already hold 200-hour (Basic) yoga teacher training certificates are encouraged to inquire about our Advanced Teacher Training Program, which is customized to each student and conducted as an ongoing mentorship over the course of no fewer than 36 months.
